If you’re interested in rejuvenating your skin, a professional chemical peel is an excellent choice. However, performing the procedure yourself can be uncomfortable and can yield uncertain results. Moreover, because a dermal peel involves the application of acids to the skin, you run the risk of damage or injury. This might sound a little scary, but with the help of our Refresh Med Spa LA team, you can enjoy fabulous results! Revitalizing peels are a common go-to solution for hyperpigmentation issues like sun damage, acne, and blemishes. If you are in need of an exfoliating peel to tackle these issues, visit our center today!

What Are Revitalizing Peels?

The advantage of repeated light chemical peeling is minimal “downtime” from work or other activities.  Repeated chemical peeling is a program of skin rejuvenation that aims to improve the skin over time rather than with one procedure. Perfect for the face, chest, back, and back of hands:

An intensive exfoliating treatment to detoxify, oxygenate, and resurface the skin for a clearer more radiant complexion.  A powerful exfoliation with a carefully selected range of cocktail acids and controlled acids to work on improving several skin situations such as reduction of acne scars, decreasing skin folds, reducing superficial, medium, and deep wrinkles and photoaging, reducing pigmentation spots and balancing the skin tone. Your Refresh Med Spa LA professional will perform an analysis of your skin to formulate the precise treatment best for you.

What Do Revitalizing Peels Do?

Your chemical peel can be adjusted based on your skin concerns. Generally, dermal peel treatments are a great choice for those struggling with issues such as hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, and sun damage. For those who have acne or age spots, a mild acid may suffice. Those struggling with rosacea, melasma, or telangiectasia may benefit more from deeper chemical peels. The beauty of choosing Refresh Med Spa LA for your skin care needs is having your peels fully customized.

Glycolic, Lactic, Salicylic, and Sensitive Skin Acid Peels

Refresh Med Spa LA offers an array of chemical peels used for the treatment of minor wrinkles, pigmentary variations, and acne.

The Lactic and Glycolic peels are very similar in their actions, but the molecules are slightly different.  A good rule of thumb is the pure Lactic is best for treating age/sunspots and the pure Glycolic is best for treating fine lines. The Glyco/Lac combination is great if you are looking for a revitalizing improvement in tone and texture.

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic Acid is the most active and beneficial of the Alpha-Hydroxy-Acids (AHA) in skin care and is made from sugar canes. It is the only AHA which can penetrate through the cell walls by virtue of its small molecular size. Once inside the cell, it will trigger a new formation of collagen and turn on the synthesis of dermal glycosaminoglycans to plump up the cell and the ground substances in the skin to reduce wrinkles on the skin’s surface. Glycolic Acid also affects the newly forming keratin cells at the bottom of the stratum corneum causing the bulk of the stratum corneum to lift off and separate from the underlying skin. This gives the skin a much smoother look and feel.

Lactic Acid

Lactic acid is a natural humectant that occurs naturally in the skin, and because of this, it is able to pull moisture from the air and hold it in the skin. Lactic acid is less irritating and more moisturizing than the Glycolic, and the Lactic can be used at a slightly higher concentration than the Glycolic because it is not as irritating.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a mild acid that works as a keratolytic agent it encourages the sloughing of dead skin cells. It’s a safe, effective treatment for mild acne, oily skin, textural changes, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in people of most skin types. Mild acid solutions, such as salicylic acid and glycolic acid, encourage the peeling of the top layer of skin and the opening of plugged follicles, which helps reestablish the normal skin-cell replacement cycle. For milder acne, salicylic acid helps unclog pores to resolve and prevent lesions. It does not have any effect on the production of sebum or the presence of P. acnes bacteria. Like many other topical acne treatments, salicylic acid must be used continuously, even after acne lesions have healed. Its effects stop when you stop using it, so your skin will return to its uneven shedding; pores become clogged, and the acne returns.

The Lactic and Salicylic peels complement each other perfectly. The Salicylic is great for acne, but is also drying, and works less well on fading pigmentation. The Lactic acid fades pigmentation and pulls moisture into the skin. So, by alternating between the peels you get the benefits of the Salicylic without the excessive dryness, and you get faster improvements to pigmentation and tone.

Our sensitive peels with a gentle PH include Argireline 20% and Azelaic Acid 15% – Recommended for sensitive skin, mild and moderate acne and rosacea, due to its ability to reduce inflammation.

VI Peels

The VI Peel is ideal for treating hyperpigmentation melasma, reversing sun damage and signs of aging improving skin tone and texture clearing Acne & reducing Acne scars stimulating collagen growth and elastin production, for younger-looking skin reducing the appearance of pores

The VI Peel is safe for all skin types and ethnicities. It is the only peel safe to use on the eye area, neck, chest, and hands. No skin preconditioning is necessary.

It is virtually discomfort free. Clients typically experience a warm, tingly sensation that quickly subsides. There is little or no downtime. You’ll see beautiful results in just one week!

What Happens During a VI Peel?

The VI Peel treatment is very convenient as it is performed in the clinic and requires no pre-treatment.

After the skin is cleaned, VI Peel will be applied topically to your skin.  Patients typically experience a warm, tingly sensation that quickly subsides.  The procedure takes only 20 to 30 minutes, but must leave the peel on the skin for five hours following the appointment.

With VI Peel there is little or no downtime.  Peeling lasts 2 to 3 days and is easily managed with the post-peel kit that is included with the peel.  For a week or two following the peel it’s best to avoid exfoliating products like glycolic acid and retinols.  Avoid direct and prolonged exposure to the sun.  As well, resist the temptation of pulling your peeling skin off – it’s important that you let it peel naturally.

Once your skin has completely recovered and is finished peeling, you will notice a visible improvement in your complexion.  Your skin’s appearance should continue to improve for the next 4 to 6 weeks, becoming firmer, clearer, smoother, healthier, and more youthful-looking.

The Best Candidates for a VI Peel

Anyone seeking to improve their skin’s tone and reduce blemishes may be a candidate for a VI Peel. The VI peel has been tested and used on individuals of a variety of skin tones, including Asian, African-American, and Latino skin types, which traditionally have not always responded positively to chemical peel treatments. The VI peel was originally developed as a treatment for acne and acne scarring and is still extremely successful at treating this sometimes frustrating condition in individuals as young as 12-years-old.
