The Art & Science of
Radiofrequency Rejuvenation
What the Next Generation of RF Technology Can Do for Your Skin
“What if tighter, smoother, more youthful skin didn’t require a surgeon’s scalpel — or weeks hidden away from the world?”
For decades, that question had no satisfying answer. Surgery delivered dramatic results but demanded real sacrifice: downtime, risk, and expense. Over-the-counter creams promised the world and delivered disappointment. The middle ground felt like a compromise at best.
Today, that middle ground has been completely reimagined. Radiofrequency (RF) technology has evolved into one of the most powerful, versatile, and medically validated tools in aesthetic medicine — and the newest generation of RF devices is raising the bar even higher. At Refresh Med Spa L.A., we’re proud to offer our clients access to these breakthroughs, delivered by a team with the training and expertise to use them safely and effectively.
Here’s everything you need to know.
How Radiofrequency Energy Rebuilds Skin From Within
Radiofrequency is a form of electromagnetic energy that, when precisely delivered into the skin, generates controlled heat in the dermal and subdermal layers. That heat does something remarkable: it triggers your body’s own healing and remodeling response.
Two things happen simultaneously. First, existing collagen fibers contract — producing an immediate visible tightening effect. Second, fibroblast cells are stimulated to manufacture fresh collagen and elastin over the weeks and months that follow. The result is progressive, natural-looking improvement in skin firmness, texture, and overall quality.
Unlike lasers or chemical peels that resurface the skin from the outside in, RF energy works from the inside out — leaving the skin’s surface largely undisturbed while remodeling the structural foundations underneath.
RF technology doesn’t mask the signs of aging — it addresses the underlying cause, rebuilding the collagen architecture that time and sun exposure have broken down.
Modern RF platforms have grown dramatically more sophisticated. Today’s devices can modulate frequency, depth, energy delivery pattern, and even adjust in real time to your individual skin’s feedback — making treatments more precise, more comfortable, and more effective than ever before.
The Devices Everyone Is Talking About
The RF landscape has never been more exciting. A new generation of devices is reaching American patients, combining advances in frequency technology, real-time tissue monitoring, and intelligent energy delivery. Here are the standouts:
XERF™ by Cynosure Lutronic
The most talked-about RF device of 2026 is XERF, developed through a partnership between Cynosure and Lutronic — two of the most respected names in medical aesthetics. XERF received FDA clearance in August 2025 and quickly became one of the most in-demand treatments on the market.
What makes XERF exceptional is its dual-frequency monopolar RF technology — delivering energy at both 2 MHz and 6.78 MHz simultaneously. This means XERF can target multiple tissue depths in a single pass, from the superficial dermis all the way down to the SMAS layer — the same structural layer tightened during a surgical facelift. Most RF devices work at a single depth. XERF works at all of them.
The system also integrates real-time impedance feedback and built-in surface cooling, allowing the device to adapt to each patient’s unique skin profile while keeping the treatment comfortable — no numbing cream required for most patients. Sessions typically run 20 to 45 minutes, and patients return to normal activities the same day.
XERF joins a remarkable lineup of proven RF platforms that we work with at Refresh Med Spa. Virtue RF & Morpheus remain the gold standards for RF microneedling, combining microneedle delivery with RF energy for deep subdermal remodeling with exceptional results for skin laxity, texture, and even acne scarring. Thermage FLX continues to deliver impressive full-face tightening using monopolar RF with comfort pulse technology. Potenza by Cynosure offers highly customizable RF microneedling with both monopolar and bipolar options across multiple depths. For patients whose primary concern is body contouring alongside skin tightening, platforms like Venus Legacy combine RF with pulsed electromagnetic fields for multi-layer tissue remodeling.
Every patient has a different anatomy, budget, and skin concern. Part of our role at Refresh Med Spa is matching the right device — or combination of devices — to your specific goals. That is the art of consultation!
What Areas Can RF Technology Treat?
One of RF technology’s greatest strengths is its remarkable versatility. Unlike surgical procedures that target a single zone, RF treatments can address virtually any area where skin laxity, textural irregularity, or loss of contour is a concern.
On the face and neck:
On the body:
Post-pregnancy skin laxity on the abdomen, crepey skin on the inner arms, and loose skin on the inner thighs are among the most popular body indications — areas where RF technology can make a meaningful difference without surgery. Devices like XERF, TempSure, as well as VirtueRF & Morpheus8 have expanded our ability to treat even delicate areas like the upper eyelid and periorbital zone, which have historically been difficult to address non-surgically.
Who Is the Ideal Candidate for RF Skin Rejuvenation?
RF treatments are appropriate for a wide range of patients, but results are most pronounced for those with mild to moderate concerns. The ideal candidate is typically someone who:
- Is noticing early-to-moderate skin laxity on the face, neck, or body — sagging that has begun but has not yet become severe
- Wants visible improvement without the risks, recovery, or cost of surgery
- Has realistic expectations: RF delivers natural, progressive results, not overnight transformation
- Is in good general health with no active skin infections, inflammatory conditions, or open wounds in the treatment area
- Does not have implanted electronic devices (pacemakers, cochlear implants) that may contraindicate RF energy near those sites
- Is not pregnant and is not actively on isotretinoin (Accutane)
- Has any skin tone — RF technology is safe and effective across all Fitzpatrick skin types, unlike certain laser treatments that carry pigmentation risk in darker skin tones
RF treatments are not a substitute for surgical intervention in cases of severe, significant skin redundancy — and any ethical provider will tell you so. For patients who fall into that category, we will always discuss honest expectations and may refer appropriately. But for the very large population living somewhere between “effortless” and “surgical,” RF represents a genuinely powerful solution.
Ideal candidates span a wide age range. We see patients in their late 20s pursuing preventive collagen stimulation, patients in their 40s and 50s addressing early jowling and neck laxity, and patients in their 60s and beyond seeking meaningful improvement without surgery.
What to Expect: During Treatment and Beyond
One of the things our patients consistently appreciate about RF treatments is how manageable the entire experience is — from the day of the procedure through the months of improvement that follow.
Your Consultation
Every treatment begins with a thorough one-on-one consultation. We evaluate your skin in detail, discuss your goals, review your health history, and design a personalized treatment plan — including which device or combination of devices will best serve you. No two plans are identical.
The Day of Treatment
Depending on the device chosen, your skin will be cleansed and, if needed, a topical numbing cream may be applied 30 to 45 minutes before treatment. For devices like XERF, numbing is often unnecessary. Sessions typically run 20 to 60 minutes depending on the area being addressed. Most patients describe the sensation as a deep, penetrating warmth — not pain. The treatment is designed to be comfortable, not white-knuckled.
Immediately After
Mild redness and warmth in the treated area are normal and typically resolve within a few hours to a day. Depending on the device, some patients may experience light swelling or pinpoint marks from microneedle treatments, which generally fade within 24 to 48 hours. The vast majority of our patients return to their normal activities the same day or the day after treatment.
The First Few Weeks
Some patients notice an immediate tightening effect from the contraction of existing collagen fibers. Over the following four to eight weeks, the deeper biological work is happening beneath the surface — new collagen fibers are forming, elastin is rebuilding, and the structural integrity of your skin is improving from within. We’ll provide specific aftercare instructions, which typically include sun protection, gentle cleansing, and temporarily avoiding intense heat or exercise for the first 24 hours.
Two to Three Months Out
This is when most patients see their full results emerge. Skin appears firmer, more lifted, and smoother in texture. Contour definition improves. Fine lines are softened. Results from a well-performed RF treatment can last nine months to over a year, particularly with a good skincare regimen and a maintenance session as needed. For optimal outcomes, a series of two to three treatments may be recommended depending on the device and your individual goals.
Why Your Provider Matters More Than the Device
Here is something we believe deeply — and say openly to every patient who walks through our door: the device is only as good as the person operating it.
RF technology has never been more powerful or more precise. But that power means that in the wrong hands, the consequences can be real. Undertreated areas yield poor results. Overtreatment or improper energy settings can cause burns, uneven results, or — in worst-case scenarios — nerve or fat atrophy. In October 2025, the FDA issued a Safety Communication specifically highlighting potential risks associated with certain uses of RF microneedling devices when not used appropriately — a reminder that advanced technology demands advanced expertise.
What to Look for in an RF Provider
When evaluating any medical spa or clinic for RF treatment, the questions you ask matter. You want a provider who has undergone formal, hands-on training on the specific device being used — not just a weekend course. You want someone with a thorough understanding of facial and body anatomy, because knowing where to deliver energy and at what depth is what separates excellent outcomes from mediocre or dangerous ones.
Ask how many treatments they have performed with that device. Ask to see before-and-after photographs of real patients. Ask what the provider’s protocol is for customizing treatment to your skin type, thickness, and concern. A knowledgeable, confident provider will welcome every one of these questions.
At Refresh Med Spa L.A., our team undergoes rigorous training and ongoing education on every device in our practice. We approach each treatment as a medical procedure, not a retail transaction — because your skin, and your safety, deserve nothing less.
We also want to acknowledge something that is increasingly important in our industry: not every business offering RF treatments is equipped to do so safely. As these technologies become more accessible, the number of under-qualified operators has grown as well. Before any treatment anywhere, verify that your provider is a licensed medical professional or is operating under direct physician supervision, and that the device being used is FDA-cleared for the indication being treated.
